Benijófar
One of the smallest municipalities in the Vega Baja, settled in the eighteenth century to farm land irrigated from the Segura and rebuilt after the 1829 earthquake.
A village on the right bank
Small parish, working huerta
Benijófar covers only a few square kilometres of the Vega Baja. It was settled in the eighteenth century under an alfonsine licence to farm land watered from the Segura.
The river both sustains the village and threatens it. Channels feed the orchards, the flood of 1957 swept through the streets, and a traditional waterwheel, mill and weir still stand at the water's edge.
